Guatemala has several different locations in which to study Spanish. The greatest concentration of Guatemala schools is in Antigua, followed by Quezaltenango.
Antigua - Beautiful colonial city that has a rather large ex-patriot community and lots of tourists. But most tourists are living with Guatemalan families and attending Spanish classes at one of the many Spanish schools. Learn Spanish in Antigua.
Quetzaltenango - The second largest city in Guatemala is Quetzaltenango, and it is known for its progressive thinking. Where Antigua’s schools focus on teaching Spanish, schools here like to include lots of talk about human rights, the country’s history and how it compares with today’s Guatemala. Learn Spanish in Quetzaltenango.
Panajachel - The peace-loving hippies can still be found in and around Lake Atitlan and Panajachel. Schools here tend to not be quite as good as schools in Antigua or Quezaltenango. Learn Spanish in Panajachel.
Huehuetenango - If you want to see real Guatemala, then go here! The locals are welcoming but very poor. Warning homestays are very basic, some with dirt floors. Learn Spanish in Huehuetenango.
Flores - Close to the Mayan ruins of Tikal and the jungle, studying in Flores is different than the other Guatemalan locations. Learn Spanish in Flores.
