Monterrico is the closest beach to Guatemala City and Antigua. Described by many as the most beautiful beach in Guatemala, with black volcanic sand and great waves for surfing. The best way to get there is by ferry through the gorgeous mangrove swamp.
There is an animal sanctuary and safari with lots of local exotic animals including turtles, caimans, and iguanas. Many people plan on visiting Monterrico for a day or two and end up staying a month or longer!
