Livingston

Weaver

A remote little spot, accessible only by boat, Livingston is the only Garifuna town in Guatemala. The Garifuna people are descendants of escaped slaves and have their own language and culture. To get to Livingston, which is actually on the mainland, travelers take a boat ride down the beautiful Rio Dulce, from Puerto Barrios, or from Belize. Livingston has a very laid-back atmosphere, great reggae clubs, and proximity to some wonderful attractions. While the beach in Livingston is nothing to write home about, a short boat ride to the Playa Blanca will yield beautiful white sand beaches. The Seven Altars is a collection of stunning waterfalls located about an hour’s hike north of Livingston.
