An old Spanish fort located on the Rio Dulce at the head of Lake Izabel, Castillo de San Felipe was built in the early 1600’s to ward off pirate attacks.
British pirates were sailing up the Rio Dulce from the Caribbean to attack mule trains and raid supplies, so the Spanish built this medieval-looking fort.
There is a restaurant, park, and swimming area next to the fort, which makes for a nice stop along a trip on the Rio Dulce.
